What is dance movement therapist?


Art therapist is a medical practitioner who has obtained a master's degree in health care and professional qualifications of the art therapist with a specialization in one of the art forms (visual plastic arts, dance and movement, music, drama).

No. 268 and No. 763, 2009, and No. 461, 2010


Art therapist certifies as medical practitioner after gaining professional qualification. Certificate of medical practitioner confirms the person’s professional background and certifies that person as medical practitioner is competent independently work in professional field. Certified art therapist continues further education and supervises one’s practise.

Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 943, 2012). 


Art therapist, a functional specialist (physiotherapist, ergotherapist, reitterapeits, technical orthopedic, clinical therapist, nutrition specialist, art therapist) is a medical practitioner who has obtained the second highest level of professional medical education and works according to his expertise in medicine.

adopted by Parliament on 21 June, 2012, entered into force on 11 July, 2012)


Functional specialist in his specialty, according to his expertise in medicine:

  1. has a good knowledge of assessing the person's functional constraints and rehabilitation principles;

  2. performs treatment using an appropriate diagnostics, evaluation and medical technologies, and provides authorized medical opinions;

  3. carries out the professional education.

Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) professional master’s degree programme "Art Therapy", 4 specializations (duration of studies 2.5 years).


Internship / employment

Art therapist works at health care facilities (hospitals, outpatient health care facilities, rehabilitation facilities), social care institutions (social care centers, social services, crisis centers, nursing homes, child care centers, orphanages, children's homes, day centers for persons with mental disorders, etc.), educational institutions (nursery schools, special schools, etc.).

Art therapist collaborates with physicians and other professionals working in a multidisciplinary team. Art therapist regularly attends supervisions of own's practice.
